Aid Progamme funding for NGOs responding in Sahel and the Horn of Africa

New Zealand will make $750,000 available to non-government organisations (NGOs) responding to famines in the Sahel or the Horn of Africa.

This funding recognises the urgent humanitarian needs in both regions of Africa. The five agencies which will receive funding are:

  • Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand: to provide food assistance in Niger.
  • Oxfam NZ: to provide immediate financial assistance to secure food and other essential items in Niger.
  • Save the Children NZ: to provide immediate financial assistance and health and psychosocial training for families and 25 health posts in Mauritania.
  • Tear Fund NZ: to provide immediate food distribution, livestock restocking, revolving loans and household grain-bank support to  families in Niger
  • World Vision: to provide food, health, nutrition, water and sanitation, and livelihood assistance in Niger.

By partnering with these organisations New Zealand’s funding will make a real difference for more than 8000 families in desperate need of support.

To date, the New Zealand Government has given $6 million to New Zealand NGOs and international agencies responding in the Horn of Africa and $1.5 million to the World Food Programme response in the Sahel.
