New Zealand Scholarships - Cook Islands

Types of scholarships

New Zealand Pacific Scholarships

Up to 6 scholarships are available for Cook Island applicants for undergraduate or postgraduate study (excluding PhDs) at one of the ten eligible New Zealand institutions.

Priority sectors

In the Cook Islands, all scholarships and awards will prioritise the following sectors:

  • Agriculture
  • Marine Resources/Fisheries
  • Tourism
  • Culture and creative industries
  • Infrastructure development: construction, waste management
  • Renewable energy
  • Technical and vocational education and training
  • Finance management.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the general eligibility criteria, outlined in the New Zealand Pacific Scholarships section.

As applicants from the Cook Islands are New Zealand citizens, to be eligible for a scholarship they must also:

  • Reside and have been schooled in the Cook Islands, and
  • Their parents must be living in the Cook Islands.

Making an application

Applicants will need to collect a preliminary application form from the Cook Islands Department of National Human Resource Development. Preliminary applications should be sent directly to the same department.

Based on their preliminary application, candidates will be assessed for eligibility and successful candidates will then be asked to submit an application for the relevant scholarship.

Preliminary applications are due 9 June 2012.

New Zealand Regional Development Scholarships

Up to 3 scholarships are available for Cook Island applicants for undergraduate or postgraduate study (excluding PhDs) at a Pacific regional institution.

Short Term Training Awards

These awards provide successful applicants with vocational and skills-based training in New Zealand for a period of less than one year.

They can include:

  • Work attachments
  • Short courses
  • Undergraduate Certificate or Diploma-level technical training.

Eligibility

Applicants must be employed, and their employer must nominate them for an award.

Applicants must also meet the Short Term Training Awards eligibility criteria.

Applicants will need to collect a preliminary application form from the Cook Islands Department of National Human Resource Development. Preliminary applications should be sent directly to that department.

Preliminary applications are due on 5 May 2011.

Commonwealth Scholarships

Candidates from the Cook Islands can apply for postgraduate study in New Zealand on a contestable basis with applicants from other developing Commonwealth countries.
